Belkin Cassette Adapter for iPod – and sinking back?

My friend has a Belkin "Car Kit for iPod. It has an age (80'something) Saturn hand-me-down, and his brother gave him the card that can play music in the car. We hae the adapter (the tape) and the part that fits into the iPod, the cigarette lighter. The problem is that when we stick to the tape, after everything is connected, the tape appears to act as if they think to play, but then appears the tape back right. We have tried to press each button rewind (, FF, play, stop, almost any button) to see if it would affect the band, but does not work. The system itself seems to work because sometimes you hear a bit of reading for the second that the band would be in the unit, but it will not stay in. Is it something that has some do with his cassette player, the card itself, or is something else (I have no idea what else …)?
